A new exhibition at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is a photographic commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The devastating storm caused widespread damage both in the Caribbean and in the United States.

The exhibition, which opens Sep. 6, examines the impact of the storm, its aftermath and the “community spirit that saw Cayman rebuild itself.”

“While it has been ten years since the storm passed, most of us continue to have strong, emotion-laden memories associated with Ivan and its aftermath so we felt it was important to commemorate the anniversary via this exhibition,” said Natalie Urquhart, curator at the National Gallery. “This is really a ‘part two’ of the Emergence exhibition that we hosted soon after Ivan in 2004. It is a closure of sorts.”

Urquhart worked with some of the top photographers in Cayman, including Courtney Platt and David Wolfe, whose photos of the storm and its impact were first shown in Emergence.

It has been a very emotional process to review and select images for Ivan Remembered,” she said. “They really take you back to those initial days after the storm.  I didn’t expect to be so moved so many years on.”

The exhibition will last through Sep. 27, 2014.
