The opposition New National Party has won Grenada’s national election in a landslide.

Preliminary results showed the NNP winning all 15 out of 15 seats contested, meaning a return to power for NNP leader and former Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, who previously led the country from 1995 to 2008.

“We are prepared to make a statement to confirm that the New National Party has been victorious — 100 percent, all 15 seats in Parliament,” NNP spokesman Terry Forrester told Caribbean Journal.

In a statement on social media, the National Democratic Congress said it “wishes to congratulate the NNP on their victory.”

“We did it!” the NNP wrote in a post on its Facebook page. “We are ready to deliver a better future for all.”

The NDC’s loss followed a tumultuous 2012 that saw the resignation of a number of Cabinet officials from Prime Minister Tillman Thomas’ government, most recently Foreign Minister Karl Hood.

If the results hold up, it would represent the second time Mitchell had led a sweep of all 15 elected seats in Parliament. He led the NNP to a similar victory in 1999.
