Montserrat’s government has broken ground on 20 new affordable homes in the island’s Davy Hill area.

The project is located on two-and-a-quarter acres of land previously purchased by the government, which also financed the installation of the area’s infrastructure, including telephone, cable and utility lines.

The government is partnering with the Montserrat Social Security on the project. The latter will fund construction in three phases, with six homes to be completed in the first phase, eight in the second and six in the third.

All mortgages on the project are being facilitated by the Bank of Montserrat.

The project is slated to be worth just under $2.6 million USD.

“Government is not in the position to finance all houses for nationals, and this is a new direction for us, to see a public-private partnership to increase our housing stock,” said Minister of Lands and Housing Easton Taylor-Farrell.
