The Biggest St Patrick’s Festival in the Caribbean Is on This Island

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 6, 2024

There’s only one country outside of Ireland that celebrates St Patrick’s Day: the Caribbean island of Montserrat, which has a deep Irish heritage thanks to a wave of immigration from the Emerald Isle beginning in the 17th century.

Today, the island still celebrates its Irish heritage, culminating in what is the largest St Patrick’s festival in the region.

The festival also commemorates the failed slave revolt that was planned for March 17 in 1768, celebrating the “bravery of those who fought for their freedom.”

That tradition will continue this year for the 42nd annual St Patrick’s Festival in Montserrat, running from March 8 to 18.

This year’s event will include a full agenda of celebrations, including an all-white party, a boat cruise, an adventure hike and an “Emerald City Reggae Fest,” among others.

The festival draws thousands of visitors each year, including returning Montserratians and visitors like.

Many accommodations are already booked up for the festival, tourism officials said.

“We are looking forward to welcoming both returning as well as first time visitors to Montserrat for the biggest St. Patrick’s Festival in the Caribbean,” said Montserrat’s director of tourism, Rosetta West Gerald. “The island has been eagerly preparing for this momentous occasion, and we are hopeful that this 42nd festival will surpass all expectations.”
