In Puerto Rico, the Flights Keep Coming

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 7, 2023

Puerto Rico has been one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean since the summer of 2020, when the island capitalized on its lack of a passport requirement to spur a new era of tourism.

That trend has shown no signs of slowing down — in fact, the island continues to see blazing tourism numbers so far in 2023.

San Juan’s primary air hub, Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, had another sizzling month in May, when passenger traffic rose by 15.5 percent to 1,089,726.

That included a significant 50 percent increase in international traffic, thanks to new and expanded routes from countries like Mexico and Spain.

Domestic traffic also grew by 12.6 percent, lifting the year-to-date passenger traffic total in San Juan to 4,952,566.

That represents a 17 percent increase, even over the airport’s impressive growth numbers in 2022.

While it may be a challenge to keep up this level of growth, Puerto Rico, thanks to strong work from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the US and, as mentioned, burgeoning markets in Europe and South America.
