In St John, a Celebration of Culture

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 6, 2023

It’s been nearly seven decades since the island of St John held its first Celebration, a tradition that has turned into one of the most vibrant summer festivals in the Caribbean. Now in its 69th year, St John Celebration is back again with weeks of parties, food fairs, parades and cultural moments.

The annual event, which begins this year on June 10, honors the history and resilience of the people of St John.

“We welcome one and all to join us for this year’s St. John Celebration,” says Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner, U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism. “This a longstanding tradition which spotlights our people, our home, and our history, which this year is enhanced by the historical emancipation anniversary.”

This year’s St John Celebration is being held under the theme “A Colorful and Cultural Jamboree,” beginning with the Pan-O-Rama event and continuing with three weeks of nonstop events.

Celebration concludes on July 4 with the Celebration Fireworks Display in Cruz Bay Harbor.

It’s part of a dynamic annual lineup of festivals across the US Virgin Islands, from St Thomas Carnival to the Caribbean’s premier holiday celebration, Crucian Christmas in St Croix.

“This year’s celebration is gearing up to be the best yet,” explains Ian Turnbull, Director of the USVI Division of Festivals. “The pride and culture of St. John and the entire USVI, from cultural celebrations to nightly performances and the highly anticipated Love City Parade, will be on full display for the world to see.”
