Melia Is Opening a New Luxury Hotel in Cuba

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 15, 2023

Trinidad, Cuba has always been one of Cuba’s most-beloved destinations, in large part thanks to its rich cultural and historical offering. But it hasn’t always had much in the way of upscale places to stay.

That could be changing this fall, however, with the addition of a new luxury hotel by Spanish hotel giant and dominant Cuban hotel player Melia.

The new Melia Trinidad Peninsula is opening its doors this fall, with what is billed as the first-ever five-star hotel in the colonial town.

The hotel, set at the edge of Trinidad’s Maria Aguilar Beach, will have 400 rooms, including a collection of rooms that will have “direct pool access,” according to the company.

It will also feature a Level wing, Melia’s “hotel within a hotel” concept that is often found at its more upscale all-inclusive resorts. The company calls it a “true oasis of luxury inside the hotel.”

Melia says the hotel is family friendly, with amenities ranging from a spa and a kids; club a business center and flexible meeting space.

The hotel’s imminent launch comes as Cuba is in the midst of a major tourism recovery after suffering seriously-moderated visitor numbers since the onset of the pandemic.

Melia officials say Cuba is expecting more than 3.5 million visitors this year.
