This Caribbean Bungalow Resort Comes With a Legendary Beach Bar

By: Alexander Britell - May 8, 2023

It is one of the Caribbean’s most alluring pilgrimage spots: the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, a beach bar that is in the pantheon of the region’s greatest watering holes.

And for more than a half century, it was accompanied by a hotel: the Sandcastle, a boutique beach resort that for decades was the perfect place to retire to after a rum-filled afternoon on White Bay.

But when Irma came, the Sandcastle was no more – until now.

The new-look, completely rebuilt Sandcastle at Soggy Dollar is officially open and taking reservations, including stays all the way through March 2024.

The boutique resort consists of two beachfront rooms, two beachfront cottages, and two garden-view rooms.

The rooms all come with exclusive beach access and onsite bar and restaurant privileges at the Soggy Dollar.

Rates are starting at $390 per night, according the hotel; stays must be for a minimum of three nights; guests must be a minimum of 25.

It’s another way to enjoy the myriad wonders of “Soggy,” as it’s affectionately known by its generations of devoted visitors, a bucket-list destination that is one of the most beloved places to visit in all of the Virgin Islands — United States and British.

Or, as the team puts it, “Stay in White Bay, keep it shady, stay at Soggy.”

The return of Sandcastle is another sign of the renaissance of Jost Van Dyke, which has seen renewed energy since the onset of the pandemic, including the debut of one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated new resorts, the nearby Hideaway hotel.

The latter, which opened its doors last year, is the first full-fledged luxury hotel on the island, where every villa comes with its own private plunge pool.

It’s another reason to visit tiny Jost Van Dyke, the beachy paradise most famously serenaded by Kenny Chesney in “It’s That Time of Day.”
