Princess Cruises Floats Out First LNG-Powered Ship

By: Alexander Britell - March 13, 2023

line’s first-ever LNG-powered ship.

The new Sun Princess was floated out at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, representing the first phase of construction.

Next on the agenda is a focus on building out the ship’s interiors.

The 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will include several new features for the brand: The Dome, an entertainment venue “inspired by the terraces of Santorini,” a new version of its popular Piazza neighborhood and a three-story Horizons Dining Room.

But the biggest story is the energy source: LNG, which will significantly reduce air emissions and marine gas oil to lower its environmental footprint.

The ship has capacity to sail for almost nine days at service speed on LNG power.

Sun Princess’ other sustainability features include the conversion of a variety of combustible material waste into thermal energy; along with a food waste management system with bio-digesters and dehydrators.

Princess Cruises says Sun Princess will begin sailing in the summer of 2024.
