LVMH Is Reopening This Top Caribbean Resort

By: Alexander Britell - February 19, 2023

LVMH’s Belmond brand is reopening its Riviera Maya luxury resort this spring following a dramatic makeover.

The new-look Maroma, a Belmond Hotel will reopen its doors on May 25, 2023, Caribbean Journal has learned.

Designer Tara Bernerd and her team have led what Belmond is calling an “extensive renovation and redesign” of the longtime Mexican Caribbean resort.

“Maroma offered a rare opportunity to reimagine this iconic hotel, with its rich and storied history,” said Bernerd. “We sought to retain and enhance the original character, working with local artisans, whilst simultaneously incorporating a contemporary elegance, a warmth that also has a sense of home, that speaks to the needs of the Belmond guest for generations to come.”

The Guerlain Spa is set in the jungle.

The project will be headlined by the addition of 10 new waterfront suites, along with a “nature focused” wellness experience with Guerlain, and a new culinary program under Mexican Chef Daniel Camacho.

The wellness destination is be the second Guerlain Spa in the wider Caribbean, joining another LVMH hotel, the Cheval Blanc St Barth Isle de France in St Barth.

The new-look, jungle-set spa will focus on traditional Mayan healing rituals and other treatments centered around the Mayan wellness philosophy. That will include a full slate of daily wellness programming like yoga and meditation.

Chef Camacho’s priority will be on “sustainable provenance,” promising to source 90 percent of all ingr3idnets from Mexico — and nearby half from the Yucatan peninsula itself.

Maroma is keeping its famous beach bar, Freddy’s Bar, which will have live music and DJ sets and a focus on seafood.

It’s the first large-scale redesign of a Belmond resort since LVMH acquired the company in 2018.

The hotel is one of just three Belmond resorts in the Caribbean, along with properties in Anguilla (Cap Juluca) and St Martin (La Samanna).

LVMH’s other Caribbean hotel property is the aforementioned Cheval Blanc St Barth-Isle de France in St Barth, although that is not part of the Belmond portfolio.
