There’s a New Airport in The Bahamas

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 19, 2022

There’s a new international airport terminal in the Out Islands of The Bahamas.

Great Harbour Cay, the beach-filled getaway in the heart of the Berry Islands chain of The Bahamas, has officially opened its new international airport.

Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper were part of a large government delegation on hand for the grand opening ceremony.

The new airport is home to scheduled service from three air carriers in Florida: Bahamas-based Aztec Airways, which operates service from Fort Lauderdale; and both Fort Lauderdale based-Tropic Ocean Airways and Makers Air.

The opening ceremony this week.

The island is chiefly a vacation-home destination, filled with picture-perfect beaches, world-class bonefishing and a stunning natural environment.

That’s turned it into an in-the-know, beloved vacation home destination, mostly for travelers from South Florida, for the last few decades.

In the 1960s, it was billed as one of the next great jet-set getaways, drawing celebrities from around the world, from Brigitte Bardot to Cary Grant, with a bumping waterfront nightclub called the Tamboo Club and an 18-hole golf course.

Today, the Tamboo Club is a relic, the golf course hasn’t seen a drive in decades.

But things are changing on Great Harbour Cay.

And the hope is that the new airport will spur new investment into the island, a destination filled with pristine, untouched beaches and large swathes of developable land, and a still-popular, active 65-slip Hurricane Hole marina.

A massive hotel-zoned beachfront site is currently on the market in Great Harbour Cay.

In fact, the island has a significant beachfront development site zoned for a hotel that’s on the market with The Bahamas’ HG Christie.

And the new airport could be just what the island needs to bring the next wave of Bardots and Grants to this secret corner of The Bahamas.
