Puerto Rico Air Arrivals Keep Surging

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 9, 2021 - 3:24 pm

Visitor traffic continues to surge to the island of Puerto Rico.

The island’s primary airport, Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, reported just under 1.19 million passengers in July — a 207 percent improvement over the same month in 2020.

More importantly, that represented a 15.6 percent jump over July 2019 — before the pandemic, according to Mexican company ASUR, which manages the airport.

For the year to date, Puerto Rico’s air traffic has nearly matched 2019 levels, with 5.555 million passengers through the first seven months of the year.

That’s just 2.3 percent less than the same period in 2019.

Puerto Rico tourism officials say that’s borne out in the island’s hotel occupancy, which has hovered above 90 percent for much of the summer.
