Voters in St Lucia and Guyana head to the polls today for elections, with both votes to be monitored by CARICOM and other observers.

St Lucians will decide between the ruling United Workers Party, headed by Prime Minister Stephenson King, and the St Lucia Labour Party, headed by former Prime Minister Kenny Anthony.

Ahead of the election in St Lucia, Caribbean Journal talked to Tourism Minister and current Parliamentary candidate Sen. Allen Chastanet, who said that jobs, the economy and the Taiwan-China question would be among the biggest issues for St Lucians.

When Prime Minister Stephenson King’s UWP entered office, it transferred its relations from China to Taiwan in 2007.

In Guyana, President Bharrat Jagdeo is constitutionally barred from running for a third-term, and his successor, Donald Ramotar, will run against a group of candidates including David Granger of A Partnership of National Unity and Khemraj Ramjattan of the Alliance for Change.
