Nevis Steers Clear of Major Irma Damage

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 6, 2017

The island of Nevis steered clear of major damage from Hurricane Irma, according to a statement from the island’s tourism authority.

Irma’s landfall was not a direct hit, meaning damage was what officials called “minimal,” with winds closer to that of a Category 1 storm.

While there is still no all clear, it appears electricity will be back by tomorrow at the latest.

The island’s largest resort, the Four Seasons, said it was in “excellent shape,” as was its beach, though trees were down and debris was scattered around the area.

Nevis’ Hermitage Inn also reported just “general” debris and nothing structural.

We are extremely fortunate to have fared as well as we have given the size of this monstrous storm,” said Tim Thuell, general manager of the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club and also Chairman of the Board for the Nevis Tourism Authority.

“Our thoughts turn now to clean up and to the safety and well-being of our Caribbean neighbors and friends who are still in harm’s way,” he says.
