Caribbean Airlines Is Adding a New Island: Puerto Rico

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 1, 2024 - 6:19 pm

The intra-regional airline market in the Caribbean is starting to heat up, and the focus is clearly on San Juan, Puerto Rico as more and more carriers set their sights on the city.

Fresh off Frontier Airlines’ major expansion out of San Juan to a number of destinations inside the Caribbean, another top carrier is looking to Puerto Rico’s capital.

Caribbean Airlines has announced plans to launch a new flight that connects Barbados and San Juan.

The new flight is part of a broader circuit that will also connect Trinidad.

On Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, Caribbean Airlines will operate flights between Trinidad and Barbados, and then between Barbados and San Juan.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, the route will run from San Juan to Barbados and then Barbadso to Trinidad.

Flights go on sale May 2.

The expansion is part of what Caribbean Airlines called its “broader growth strategy” in the region.

“We are excited to expand our passenger services to San Juan, Puerto Rico, as part of our ongoing effort to better connect the Caribbean,” said Caribbean Airlines CEO Garvin Madera. “This move is crucial to our growth strategy and represents our commitment to offering our customers convenient and reliable travel and trade options. At Caribbean Airlines, we embrace the spirit of ‘Welcome Home,’ and we look forward to extending that warmth and hospitality to our passengers traveling to and from Puerto Rico.”

San Juan continues to position itself as a major regional hub as the airport posts record-setting passenger traffic numbers.

That’s clearly what Frontier sees at the airport, too, with recently-announced intraregional routes out of San Juan to destinations including St Thomas, St Croix, Cancun, St Maarten and, most recently, Barbados., the latter a route that was just announced last week.
