A contract signed by the United States Overseas Private Investment Corporation to fund the first phase of the wind farm at Bel Vue in St Kitts is under review, according to Prime Minister Denzil Douglas.

According to developer North Star, the USOPIC has committed $16.5 million to fund construction,

“The contract that was previously signed with North Star covers a 20-year period,” Douglas said. “This contract, I have been informed by the Ministry of Energy, is presently under review by the Ministry of Legal Affairs and by our consultant in the Department of Energy.”

St Kitts’ move follows an already-established wind farm in Nevis.

Douglas said conditions should support such a course of action.

The expected initial capacity for the farm is 5.4 megawatts, with the potential for expansion to 20 megawatts.

“Initiatives in renewable energy, whether they are geothermal-based, wind or solar-based, are all important developments for the federation,” he said. “Fossil fuels are finite. Oil prices on the world market can be volatile. And oil supplies are determined by forces beyond our control.”
