Trinidad’s State of Emergency and 11PM to 4AM curfew will remain in place until so advised by the security agencies, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced today after a cabinet meeting.

Both measures, which were instituted on Aug. 21, will be constantly reviewed. The three-month State of Emergency will see its official end on Dec. 5.

According to Persad-Bissessar, the security agencies have informed her that the two measures have been “valuable tools in the fight of crime.”

Agencies are putting in place measures to deal with crime after the State of Emergency is called off, she said.

According to the Prime Minister, there have been 3,932 arrests since the declaration of the State of Emergency.

Last week, Persad-Bissessar was briefly hospitalized after complaining of feeling unwell. Tests revealed mostly normal assessments, although there was some concern over reported “swelling of her feet,” according to Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan.
