A New Heritage Site in St. Kitts

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - October 8, 2016 - 9:10 am

St. Kitts’ famous Black Rocks area is about to get a major facelift — and a designation as a national heritage site.

The country has submitted the proposal for a “substantial upgrade” of the site, given its historical, educational and touristic value, according to St. Kitts Tourism Minister Lindsey Grant.

“There is a need for urgent intervention to raise the standard of the product so that it offers a much improved and more comfortable vendor and visitor experience, befitting one of our popular and premier natural tourist attractions,” Grant said.

The White Gate Development Corporation has been tapped for the proposed planning and implementation of the project, supported by the Ministry of Tourism.

The plan will be implemented in two phases, with the first including new chattel-house-style wooden retail booths, and upgrades to infrastructure and landscaping.

The second phase will see improvements of the island’s Scenic Railway to “capture the rich heritage of the Sugar Belt of St. Kitts,” according to a statement.
