Jamaica’s Latest Tourism Push Will Focus on Kingston

When it comes to Jamaica’s tourism market, the country’s capital, Kingston, has long been an afterthought.

The vast majority of tourism development has come in beach areas, most significantly Montego Bay.

Now, however, Jamaica’s government says it is looking to change that.

“Kingston is being repositioned as a creative city, offering great insights into our unique Jamaican culture. Jamaica’s Blue and John Crown Mountain National Park was this year named a world heritage site,” said Jamaica Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

Under a new thrust to improve the country’s ever-important tourism sector, Simpson Miller said Kingston would receive “major focus.”

The city recently got a significant boost thanks to the opening of the eco-friendly Courtyard Marriott Kingston, the city’s first new-build hotel in decades.
