Noted art collector Gary Nader is planning to build what he is calling a “world-class” Latin American Art Museum in Miami, he announced Tuesday.

In a statement, Nader said the museum aspired to be “most important venue in North America to showcase acclaimed Latin American Art and will be fully dedicated to foster knowledge by a continuous process of appreciation and reinterpretation of Modern and Contemporary art from Latin American and its diaspora.”

While the museum is called Latin American, Nader told Caribbean Journal in a statement that the museum would “of course” feature Caribbean art.

Nader is a well-known collector of Caribbean and particularly Haitian art. His Gary Nader Fine Art is the largest fine art gallery in South Florida.

“Our aim is to launch a joint venture involving all sectors of the community including artists, writers, actors, musicians, producers, collectors, corporations, developers, investors and the public in general to create a project in which we may be able to articulate the past and present Latin American Art for the world to enjoy and admire,” Nader said.

Miami, long considered the de facto capital of the region, would seem to be a natural fit.

“Miami is a cosmopolitan city that has become a leader in tourism, finance, commerce, international trade, entertainment and culture,” Nader said. “For all these reasons and more I am honoured to announce the upcoming creation of the Latin American Art Museum in the crossroads of the Americas.”
