Protests Continue in Turks and Caicos

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 15, 2011 - 5:10 am

Protesters in the Turks and Caicos have not yet relented, continuing their movement for expedited elections in the territory, which saw its self-rule suspended in 2009 after allegations of government corruption. The protesters have refused to dismantle a barricade along the Airport Road in the island chain’s capital, Providenciales. “Give us an election date this year and we will remove the blockade from the roadway,” the protesters demanded. When the government took over in 2009, it promised elections by 2011, but during a visit last year by UK Parliamentary Undersecretary of State Henry Bellingham, he explained that the process of writing a new constitution, along with a UK probe, meant elections would not occur as scheduled. The protesters began their stand on Airport Road Mar. 8.
