The Nassau Cruise Port Is Putting the City’s Iconic Straw Market in the Spotlight

By: Guy Britton - March 28, 2025 - 10:08 am

It’s not just a market. Not just a collection of vendors and artists. Nassau’s legendary Straw Market is a living, breathing symbol of the creativity of The Bahamas.

And now the city’s cruise port is putting the Straw Market back into the spotlight with a new campaign called “Rooted in Tradition, Made in The  Bahamas,” highlighting the local artisans who “embody the heart and soul of our nation,” according to the Port’s Maya Nottage,

“The Straw Market is a vital part of Nassau’s cultural fabric, and we are thrilled to partner with Nassau  Cruise Port on this campaign,” said Carolyn Bowe, managing director of the Straw Market Authority in Nassau. “It gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent and hard work of our  artisans, while also reinforcing the importance of supporting local businesses. This initiative is a testament to  the enduring spirit of Bahamian craftsmanship and the pride we take in creating products that are truly made  in The Bahamas.”

So what’s in store? Travelers and locals will find a series of events and programming encouraging them to buy local Bahamian products.

The Straw Market, set in the heart of downtown on Bay Street, filled with every manner of handmade good, from jewelry and wood carvings to clothing — all Bahamian made.

Nassau’s cruise port is the most-visited cruise destination in the Caribbean; the port just set an all-time record for passenger arrivals in a single day.
