For a destination that has helped lead the way for the Caribbean out of the pandemic, it’s no surprise that the US Virgin Islands is at the forefront with another innovation: a brand-new Caribbean tourism summit.

The new US Virgin Islands Tourism Summit is holding its inaugural edition next week in St Thomas, with a host of panels and talks covering the state of tourism in the region right now.

The event, which will be held July 25, aims to “serve as an annual forum to spotlight the tourism industry in the US Virgin Islands and throughout the Caribbean,” according to a statement from the US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, which is hosting the event.

This year’s inaugural event will include sessions on the state of USVI tourism; the state of the Caribbean at large; a look at expanding the tourism product; social media trends; tourism economics; and a deep dive into tourism economics.

Speakers will include US Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr, USVI Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte; Black Travel Alliance President Martinique Lewis; and Brittany McCallum, vice president of Basketball Marketing at KLUTCH Sports Group, among others.

Caribbean Journal editor and publisher Alexander Britell and EVP and managing editor Guy Britton will also be panelists.

The event will help put the USVI in the regional spotlight, highlighting the work that began with the USVI’s deft handling of the destination’s pandemic tourism opening (anchored by its health travel portal) and its navigation of the highly competitive regional tourism market in the post-pandemic period.

That’s helped the USVI continue to post Caribbean-leading tourism numbers, with travel demand leading Expedia to call St Thomas its number one trending domestic destination.
