There’s a new way to get to one of the most sought-after islands in the Out Islands of The Bahamas: the uncrowded, beach-filled, blue-hole covered Long Island.

Fort Lauderdale-based Makers Air has launched new nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Long Island, a significant boost for travelers looking to reach the destination.

The flights are operating twice each week, with service on Thursday and Sundays.

Makers operates the flights out of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, meaning it’s semi-private service – that gives travelers the opportunity to check in later than for a typical commercial flight.

“Supporting additional airlift along with advancing plans for the construction of a new airport in Deadman’s Cay, are part of The Government’s Family Islands (Out Islands) Renaissance Project,” said Dr Kenneth Romer, deputy director general of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.. “Our main priority as an organization is to continue to grow air stop over arrivals and engage with new source markets. We are grateful for our partnership with Makers Air and their dedication to providing easy, reliable, and convenient flights to the Islands of The Bahamas.”

The new service “marks the beginning of a thrilling journey as we inaugurate new airline service with Makers Air from Fort Lauderdale’s Executive Airport to Stella Maris, Long Island, Bahamas,” said Kerry Fountain, executive director of The Bahamas Out Islands Promotion Board.

Long Island is a sandy, rugged, naturalist’s paradise, from the world-famous Dean’s Blue Hole to Hamilton’s Cave and the stunning Cape Santa Maria Beach.

That’s along with thriving coral reefs, pristine beaches and superb fishing, diving and boating.

“As we embark on this exciting journey to Stella Maris, Long Island, we are thrilled to bring a direct connection from Florida to this hidden gem in The Bahamas. Long Island has so much to offer, and with this new route, we hope to provide a much-needed travel option to both vacationers and residents,” said David Hocher, owner and president of Makers Air.

Makers has a growing network of scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale across The Bahamas, including flights to Chub Cay, Cat Island, Great Harbour Cay, Eleuthera and Andros.

“We are delighted to welcome Makers Air to Long Island, a testament to our destination’s allure. With this direct service, accessing the beauty and charm of Long Island has never been more convenient,” said Greg Vogt, general manager of the Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort, one of the island’s top hotels. “Your journey awaits, effortlessly bridging Fort Lauderdale to the enchanting landscape and unparalleled white sand beaches.”
