Marriott to Reopen Top Dominican Republic All-Inclusive

Marriott International has quietly been cultivating a broad portfolio of all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, from small boutiques in Barbados to large beach hotels in Antigua.

Last year, that included Marriott’s highly-anticipated addition of what is now the crown jewel of its all-inclusive portfolio: the adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, the first Luxury Collection all-inclusive resort in the entire Caribbean.

Just a few weeks after it joined Marriott’s Luxury Collection portfolio, though, things hit a snag, with the arrival of Hurricane Fiona.

The September storm caused enough damage at the Playa Hotels and Resorts-owned property to cause a four-month closure.

Next week, though, the resort is making its triumphant post-Fiona return.

On Jan, 20, Sanctuary Cap Cana begins welcoming back guests, according to Playa and the resort’s Web site.

It’s a significant boost for Cap Cana, which has become one of the country’s hottest all-inclusive destinations with resorts like Secrets Cap Cana and Hyatt’s Zilara and Zilara resorts and, most recently, a new Margaritaville Island Reserve.

None is like Sanctuary, though, unique for its Spanish-colonial, castle-style aesthetic and some of the Caribbean’s coolest swim-up rooms.

The 324-suite resort on Juanillo Beach, which was recently named one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, has a total of 324 suites, 46,000 square feet of meeting and event space and a party piece: the 5,500-square-foot Caste Island Suite, the only Caribbean hotel room that comes on its own private island.

Dining concepts range from the Sanctuary Town, a food hall-style dining destination, to signature eateries like Capriccio and The Steakhouse.

Marriott’s all-inclusive portfolio now includes resorts in Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, most of which are the product of an alliance with Canadian all-inclusive brand Royalton.
