Antigua and Barbuda Is the Caribbean’s Hottest Wellness Destination

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - January 1, 2023

Antigua and Barbuda tourism is sizzling, and now the twin-island destination is making a renewed push into the wellness space, from plant-based eateries to wellness weeks and new spa concepts.

The wellness focus begins with the island’s Wellness Month in January, followed by a year-long slate of events and vacations.

January’s Wellness Month includes a full slate of wellness-targeted activities, healthy dining menus and even digital mocktail sessions.

But the wellness won’t stop in January, though.

Several hotels have launched special wellness-themed vacations over the course of the year, starting with Carlisle Bay Wellness Retreat in February, a three-night, all-inclusive vacation the includes daily meditation, yoga classes, snorkeling, rainforest hikes and the counsel of a holistic health practitioner.

In April, the island’s famous Curtain Bluff will host two “Heatlh and Wellness Weeks,” from April 15-22 and April 22-26. Each week will include daily intimate group classes, tennis lessons with in-house pros, daily spa treatments and activities like sunset mediation, acute aerobics and fitness walks.

In May, the island’s beloved marathon, Run in Paradise, returns for a 26-mile jaunt though St John’s and the northern coast of the island. The race also has half-marathon, 10K and 5K run and walk options.

Even the destination’s chic Nobu Barbuda has gotten into the wellness space, now offering beach massages on request.

And the island is now home to a brand-new plant-based restaurant: Bush Bungalow Creations, billed as the Caribbean’s first minimal-waste, plant-based restaurant showcasing both local and international cuisine, all under the expert culinary stewardship of Chef Jermaine Jonas. It even features plant-based takes on culinary classics like Shepherd’s Pie and pizza.
