American Airlines Is Opening Its Largest Admirals Club in Charlotte, With Bars and Spa-Style Showers
The new lounge will span more than 40,000 square feet at one of American’s key connecting hubs for Caribbean vacations, with an opening expected in early 2028.
A connection in Charlotte can be the pause between an early morning departure from home and an afternoon arrival in the Caribbean. It’s where you grab breakfast, answer a few emails and wait for the flight that takes you to the island.
Now American Airlines is planning a significant upgrade to that part of the journey: the largest Admirals Club in its network, coming to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The new lounge will occupy more than 40,000 square feet on the airport’s Atrium mezzanine, with views across the concourse below. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, and the space is expected to open in early 2028.
What’s Coming to the Lounge
American’s plans call for spa-style shower suites, bars, dining areas and dedicated spaces for getting things done between flights. The layout will accommodate different kinds of visits, whether you’re stopping for a meal or settling in during a longer connection.
The mezzanine setting puts the lounge above the activity of the terminal, with sweeping concourse views a defining part of the design. American says the interiors will draw on Charlotte’s tree canopy and textile heritage, giving the space a connection to the city outside the airport.
The practical appeal is straightforward. A shower can be useful after an overnight journey; a dining area gives you somewhere to sit down before your next departure. Separate seating and laptop areas can accommodate passengers with different priorities during the same connecting window.
The Caribbean Connection
Charlotte is an important part of American’s Caribbean flight network, serving both local passengers and travelers connecting from other cities across the United States.
That includes service to Barbados, with Charlotte among the airline’s gateways to the island, as we detailed in our look at American’s Barbados flights. The airline has also served Curaçao from Charlotte, alongside its Miami operation.
A lounge expansion at a connecting airport reaches beyond the city where it opens. Travelers whose Caribbean itineraries pass through Charlotte could use the new space on the way south or during the trip home, provided they have eligible access.
The benefit will depend on the itinerary. A short connection may leave little time for a lounge visit, while a longer layover could allow for a meal, a shower or a comfortable seat before boarding.
Another Part of Charlotte’s Lounge Expansion
American announced a broader lounge investment in Charlotte last year, including plans for the airport’s first Flagship lounge and an expanded Admirals Club presence.
That earlier announcement outlined spaces for relaxing, dining, privacy and family use. The Flagship concept also includes a champagne greeting and locally inspired menus, making it a separate part of American’s premium lounge offering at the airport.
Charlotte already has another newer option: Provisions by Admirals Club, which opened in 2025 near Gate A1. At approximately 2,000 square feet, that location focuses on quick visits, with food and beverages to take along and representatives available for travel assistance. It gives eligible passengers an option when they have time for a snack but little opportunity to settle in.
What Travelers Can Use Now
American says its existing Admirals Clubs in Concourse B and at the Concourse C/D intersection, along with Provisions, will remain open during construction.
Access requires eligibility under the airline’s lounge policies. American lists memberships, qualifying status, certain credit card benefits and one-day passes among the available routes to entry; passengers should check the requirements for their particular trip.
The new lounge is still a future addition, with early 2028 the expected opening window. Caribbean travelers connecting through Charlotte before then will continue to use the airport’s current lounge options.
