Southwest Is Opening Its First-Ever Airport Lounges, Including at Key Gateways to the Caribbean

Southwest Airlines is getting into the airport lounge business for the first time, unveiling plans for a new network that will include lounges at four of its important airports — including airports travelers already use to reach the Caribbean.

The airline says construction has begun on its first four lounges, with the first guests expected in late 2027. The initial locations will be Austin, Baltimore/Washington, Honolulu and Nashville, with at least seven more lounges planned over the next several years.

And while this is a major shift in the Southwest passenger experience generally, there’s a particularly interesting Caribbean component.

Southwest has been expanding its Caribbean network in a significant way, with new and expanded service to destinations including Aruba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

That makes several of these first lounge locations particularly relevant for Caribbean vacations.

Baltimore/Washington

This is a particularly important one for Caribbean travelers. Baltimore/Washington is one of Southwest’s largest operations and an important jumping-off point for the airline’s warm-weather network.

Most notably, Southwest launched daily nonstop service from Baltimore to St. Thomas earlier this year, part of the carrier’s entrance into the U.S. Virgin Islands market.

Baltimore also gives Southwest travelers access to other destinations across the Caribbean through its broader network, making the airport an important connecting point for passengers coming from elsewhere in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

That means a Southwest lounge here could be especially useful: arrive early, have something to eat, get some work done and then board a flight south. It gives a Caribbean trip on Southwest a premium airport component that simply hasn’t existed before.

Nashville

Nashville may have the most interesting Caribbean story of the four.

Southwest has been turning Nashville into a significant Caribbean gateway, with a rapidly expanding collection of nonstop leisure routes.

The carrier already flies from Nashville to San Juan and Punta Cana, and its Caribbean network from Tennessee is getting considerably larger in 2027.

Southwest is launching nonstop Nashville-Aruba service in March 2027. It is also launching a new nonstop flight from Nashville to St. Thomas that month.

Jamaica is part of the picture, too, with Southwest bringing back its Nashville-Montego Bay service in March.

The result is a remarkably varied warm-weather network from Nashville, with Southwest connecting the city to Aruba, Jamaica, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, along with destinations in Mexico and Central America.

That makes the lounge more than a domestic-travel perk. For a growing number of travelers, it will effectively be the starting point of a Caribbean vacation.

Austin

Austin has a different but increasingly important connection to the wider Caribbean.

Southwest is launching a new nonstop flight from Austin to Costa Rica in March 2027, connecting the Texas capital with San José.

It’s part of a broader transformation of Austin into a growing departure point for travel to the Caribbean Basin. The city has been adding more international connectivity in recent years, including flights to the Mexican Caribbean and Grand Cayman on other carriers.

For Central Texas travelers, the new Southwest lounge adds a premium element at the beginning of those trips — particularly notable for an airline that historically hasn’t competed on lounges at all.

Honolulu

Honolulu is the outlier from a Caribbean perspective, but it helps explain the larger strategy.

Southwest has developed a substantial Hawaii operation, including inter-island service and mainland connections. Putting one of its first lounges there underscores how much of the initial lounge strategy is tied to major leisure markets.

That’s significant when you look at the other three airports.

Baltimore, Nashville and Austin all have important warm-weather networks, and Nashville in particular is emerging as one of Southwest’s more interesting new Caribbean gateways.

The new spaces are being developed in partnership with Chase and will combine Southwest’s hospitality concept with elements of the existing Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network, including locally inspired dining and upgraded amenities.

“Southwest Airlines has built one of the most trusted brands in travel by delivering authentic Hospitality that Customers value. Our lounges will be a natural extension of that experience, offering Customers a place to relax and experience the Southwest brand in a new way,” Tony Roach, Southwest’s executive vice president and chief customer and brand officer, said in a statement.

“The introduction of a lounge network represents a strategic investment in Rapid Rewards and deepens our 30-year partnership with Chase.”

The first four lounges are only the beginning. Southwest says at least seven additional locations are planned over the next several years in high-demand business and leisure markets.

For Caribbean travelers, those next locations may be even more significant.

Southwest’s Caribbean network has been growing quickly. The carrier has expanded with new flights to destinations including Aruba, Jamaica, St. Thomas and Punta Cana, while its broader regional network includes The Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos.

If future lounges land at more of the airline’s major Caribbean gateways, Southwest could be creating something it has never really had before: a premium ground experience attached to its Caribbean vacation network.

And with Baltimore, Nashville and Austin among the first airports getting lounges, that transformation is already intersecting with the way Southwest travelers get to the Caribbean.
