This Caribbean Beach Resort Is Adding 22 “Jungle Chic” Rooms, a Magnesium Pool, and a New Kind of Island Escape

The palms form a canopy over winding saltwater pools. Stone pathways disappear into thick tropical gardens. Just beyond the trees, the sand and beach clubs of Curaçao’s Mambo Beach bring a completely different kind of energy.

It has always been the formula at The Kontiki Beach Resort Curaçao: part secluded tropical retreat, part beachfront playground, all wrapped in the colors and rhythms of Willemstad.

Now the resort is getting bigger.

The Kontiki is adding 22 new rooms and suites, along with a new magnesium swimming pool, in an expansion set to welcome its first guests on Dec. 7.

The new Tropical Deluxe rooms and suites are already available for reservations, extending a property that has spent the last 20 years developing one of the most distinctive hotel experiences in Curaçao.

A New Tropical Wing

The new accommodations continue The Kontiki’s signature “jungle chic” aesthetic, with generous room layouts, open architecture and interiors shaped by wood, stone, greenery and sand-toned finishes.

The goal is to make the new wing feel like a natural extension of the existing resort rather than a separate hotel addition.

“In developing these rooms, we listened closely to what our guests expect from a stay at The Kontiki: space, calm, and quality down to the last detail,” said John Veensma, the resort’s chief operating officer.

The new collection includes both rooms and suites, giving the property more options for couples, longer stays and travelers who want additional living space.

Each unit has been designed around the indoor-outdoor character that runs throughout the resort, where balconies, terraces, tropical landscaping and water are integral to the experience.

Why Add a Magnesium Pool?

At the center of the new wing will be a magnesium swimming pool, an unusual amenity in the Caribbean hotel market and a growing feature at wellness-oriented resorts around the world.

Magnesium pools use mineral-based water treatment systems rather than relying solely on traditional chlorine. The result is generally softer-feeling water with less of the familiar chlorine smell, while magnesium is often associated with a more soothing swimming experience for the skin and muscles.

The pool also fits naturally into a resort already known for water.

The Kontiki’s existing saltwater lagoons and pools wind through its tropical gardens, creating swimming areas just steps from many of the rooms. Lounge beds are tucked among the landscaping, giving the interior of the resort a quieter feeling than the busy beachfront just outside.

“With this expansion, we’re adding something that fits exactly with what Kontiki already stands for: hospitality that goes beyond comfort alone,” said Terence van der Valk, general director of The Kontiki Beach Resort Curaçao.

The addition, he said, represents an investment in the experience the hotel wants to provide over its next 20 years.

What Is It Like to Stay at The Kontiki?

The Kontiki is one of the rare Curaçao resorts where you can choose between two very different vacations without changing hotels.

Inside the property, the atmosphere is relaxed and deeply tropical. Rooms and suites are surrounded by gardens, palms and swimming areas, with wooden walkways and open-air spaces throughout the grounds.

Step outside the gardens and you are immediately connected to one of the island’s liveliest beachfront districts.

The hotel is located along Mambo Beach, a broad stretch of white sand near Willemstad with restaurants, bars, boutiques and watersports. The adjoining Mambo Beach Boulevard has more than 50 shops, dining venues and activities across two levels.

The Kontiki experience is tied closely to three beach clubs: Cabana Beach, Mood Beach and Wet & Wild.

Each has a different personality.

Cabana is the all-day option, with beach beds, breakfast, lunch, dinner and a menu that ranges from sushi and salads to burgers and Mediterranean dishes.

Mood Beach is the more elevated dining experience, with cabanas, cocktails, international cuisine and sushi at Mood Marina.

Wet & Wild brings the party side of Curaçao into the picture, with casual drinks, beach bites, DJ nights, live music and events after sunset.

Hotel guests receive complimentary use of beach beds, towels and Wi-Fi in the resort’s affiliated beach areas.

Can You Have a Quiet Trip Here?

Yes, and the contrast is precisely what makes The Kontiki work.

You can spend the day inside the gardens, swimming in the saltwater pools, reading on a terrace or using the new magnesium pool. Then you can walk to the beach for dinner, cocktails or music without arranging transportation.

The resort also provides complimentary entry to BlueMaxx Health Club, including its gym, sauna and group fitness classes. Pilates, healthy menus, fresh juices and lighter dining options are part of the hotel’s broader wellness program.

The Kontiki is not a traditional all-inclusive resort. Breakfast can be added to a stay and is served at Cabana Beach, while lunch and dinner are reserved separately at the surrounding restaurants and beach clubs.

The arrangement gives you more freedom to explore Willemstad’s dining scene, particularly the restaurants of Pietermaai, Punda and the historic center.

A Resort With Deep Curaçao Roots

The Kontiki opened in 2006, but the family behind the property has been part of Curaçao’s hotel industry for considerably longer.

The van der Valk family began its hotel story on the island in 1988 with the opening of the Van der Valk Plaza Hotel. The Kontiki later developed its own identity, with an emphasis on tropical gardens, open-air spaces and a less conventional resort design.

The hotel remains family-owned.

Its expansion arrives as Curaçao continues to broaden its hotel product, adding new resorts, branded properties and all-inclusive rooms while established independent hotels continue to reinvest.

The Kontiki’s new wing represents a different side of the island’s hotel growth: a locally rooted resort adding capacity while preserving the personality that made it successful in the first place.

What Else Can You Do Nearby?

The resort’s location makes it easy to divide a Curaçao trip between beach days and the island’s cultural attractions.

The pastel-colored center of Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive away. You can explore the floating Queen Emma Bridge, the streets of Punda, the murals and restaurants of Pietermaai and the shops around the Rif Fort.

Curaçao is also one of the Caribbean’s great diving destinations, with coral reefs, wrecks and shore-diving sites spread around the island.

Farther west, beaches including Playa Kenepa Grandi, Playa Lagun and Cas Abao offer a quieter counterpoint to Mambo Beach, while Christoffel National Park brings hiking trails, cactus-covered hills and sweeping island views.

Curaçao has nonstop air service from several major North American gateways, along with connections through Miami, Panama City and other Caribbean hubs.

Airlines serving the island include American Airlines, JetBlue, United Airlines, Air Canada and Copa Airlines, along with KLM and TUI from Europe and a growing roster of regional carriers.

Flights arrive at Curaçao International Airport, about a 20-minute drive from The Kontiki under normal traffic conditions.
