Puerto Rico’s Main Airport Saw Passenger Traffic Slip 3.5 Percent in the First Half

Passenger traffic at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan declined during the first half of the year, according to newly released aviation data from ASUR, which manages the airport.

The airport handled 3,455,197 passengers during the six-month period, down from 3,580,600 passengers in the first half of last year.

The difference amounted to approximately 125,400 fewer passengers, representing a 3.5 percent year-over-year decline.

The results mark a softer first half for Puerto Rico’s principal air gateway following several years of strong passenger growth, new route launches and increased airline capacity from major US markets.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport remains the busiest airport in the Caribbean and one of the region’s most important aviation hubs, serving both Puerto Rico’s tourism industry and a large visiting-friends-and-relatives market between the island and the mainland United States.

A Major Caribbean Aviation Gateway

San Juan has one of the most extensive route networks of any airport in the Caribbean, with nonstop service from major gateways including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas.

The airport also plays an important role in regional travel, connecting Puerto Rico with destinations across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Its passenger totals are supported by a broad mix of leisure travelers, Puerto Rican residents, cruise passengers, business travelers and people visiting family on the island.

The airport’s large domestic network has helped Puerto Rico maintain stronger air connectivity than many neighboring destinations, particularly during periods when airline capacity across the Caribbean has been uneven.

San Juan is served by several major US airlines, including American Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, along with a number of regional and international carriers.

Traffic Remains Above Three Million Passengers

Despite the decline, passenger traffic remained substantial during the first half, with more than 3.45 million travelerspassing through the airport.

The figures confirm San Juan’s continued position as the leading air hub in the region, even during a period of reduced year-over-year traffic.

A decline of 3.5 percent is significant for an airport of San Juan’s size, but the overall passenger volume remains well ahead of most competing Caribbean gateways.

The numbers also reflect the size and diversity of Puerto Rico’s aviation market. Unlike many Caribbean airports that depend heavily on seasonal tourism demand, San Juan benefits from year-round passenger flows tied to the island’s population, its commercial ties with the mainland and its role as a cruise and convention destination.

What the Decline Could Mean

The first-half decrease may point to a period of moderation after several years of rapid expansion in Puerto Rico’s airline market.

Airlines have added a large number of seats to San Juan in recent years, particularly from Florida and the northeastern United States. The latest data suggest passenger growth has begun to cool, at least during the first six months.

The decline could also reflect changes in airline capacity, route frequency or travel demand across individual markets.

Even relatively small adjustments by major carriers can have a measurable effect on San Juan’s overall traffic because of the airport’s large concentration of flights from the mainland United States.

The results will place additional attention on the airport’s performance during the second half, including the important winter travel period when airlines typically increase Caribbean capacity.

Puerto Rico’s Broader Tourism Picture

Air passenger traffic is one of the most closely watched indicators for Puerto Rico’s tourism industry.

San Juan serves as the arrival point for the majority of visitors staying in the metropolitan area, while also providing connections for travelers heading to other parts of the island.

The airport supports hotels throughout San Juan, Isla Verde, Condado and Old San Juan, along with rental car companies, restaurants, attractions and the island’s cruise sector.

Passenger trends at Luis Muñoz Marín can therefore provide an early indication of broader demand across the tourism economy.

A reduction in airport traffic does not necessarily translate directly into the same decline in hotel stays, since the passenger count includes residents and connecting travelers. Still, sustained changes in air traffic can influence room demand, airline capacity and destination marketing decisions.

The Second Half Will Be Closely Watched

The airport will now look to the second half of the year to determine whether the decline represents a temporary slowdown or the beginning of a more sustained period of softer traffic.

San Juan traditionally benefits from stronger winter demand, particularly from cold-weather markets in the northeastern United States.

Additional airline capacity, new routes and increased flight frequencies could help narrow the gap during the remainder of the year.
