American Airlines Is Bringing Starlink Wi-Fi to More Than 500 Planes

American Airlines is about to make flying a whole lot more connected.
The Fort Worth-based carrier announced Tuesday that it will install Starlink — the high-speed satellite internet service from Elon Musk’s SpaceX — on more than 500 of its narrowbody aircraft, with the rollout set to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
It comes after another major airline, United, already began the process of launching Starlink in its fleet.
That’s a sweeping change for American, and one that will be felt in a big way across its Caribbean network, where the airline’s Airbus narrowbody fleet handles the vast majority of flights to destinations from Jamaica to St. Maarten to Aruba.
Starlink, which uses a constellation of thousands of low Earth orbit satellites, is widely considered the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky, capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and real-time collaboration tools — the kind of connectivity travelers have come to expect at home, but rarely get at 35,000 feet.
“As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want,” American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a statement. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”
What It Means for Caribbean Travelers
The upgrade will cover American’s domestic and short-haul international routes — which includes essentially all of its Caribbean flying. The airline’s Airbus A319, A320 and A321 jets, along with new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries, are the workhorses of its routes to the islands from hubs like Miami, Charlotte and New York.
That means travelers heading to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and beyond can expect to soon stream, scroll and work as if they were on the ground.
According to American, Starlink’s Aero Terminal can support up to 1 Gbps per antenna — multigigabit connectivity that’s a significant leap over the legacy inflight Wi-Fi most fliers have grown frustrated with.
“American is committed to elevating every aspect of our customers’ travel journeys, which in the air means keeping them connected and comfortable with the assurance they won’t have to download documents ahead of a flight or worry about lag time,” Garboden added. “We are excited to bring an at-home level of Wi-Fi experience to our narrowbody fleet, enabling our customers to work, game, stream and scroll endlessly.”
A Growing Trend in the Skies
American joins a growing list of major carriers turning to Starlink for inflight connectivity, as the satellite network rapidly becomes the gold standard for aviation Wi-Fi.
“We are proud to bring Starlink on board American Airlines, delivering fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew,” said Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX. “Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable.”
The rollout comes as American marks its centennial year in 2026, a milestone the airline — the world’s largest — is celebrating with a series of customer experience upgrades.
For Caribbean-bound travelers, the message is simple: by 2027, the flight down to the islands is about to get a whole lot more productive. Or, if you prefer, a whole lot more entertaining.
