Holiday Inn Just Opened Its Newest Caribbean Hotel in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has added a new internationally branded hotel on the north coast.
President Luis Abinader has officially inaugurated the Holiday Inn Puerto Plata – Cofresí Bay Area by IHG, a new property developed with an investment of $26 million that adds 115 rooms to Puerto Plata’s growing hotel inventory.
It’s the second Holiday Inn in the Dominican Republic, and one of seven in the broader Caribbean, distributed across Aruba, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The hotel, located in the Cofresí area just outside the city of Puerto Plata, is being positioned as part of the destination’s wider tourism renewal push, with government officials emphasizing the role of new private-sector investment in strengthening the province’s competitiveness.
115 Rooms, New Facilities and Events Space
The new Holiday Inn includes 115 guestrooms, along with a restaurant, a lobby bar, a swimming pool and meeting and event facilities designed for corporate and social gatherings.
Officials said the project is expected to generate more than 100 direct and indirect jobs, adding to the local economy in Puerto Plata and surrounding communities.
IHG Brand Seen as a Signal for Puerto Plata’s Repositioning
During the opening, Abinader said the arrival of internationally recognized hotel brands is an important part of Puerto Plata’s effort to strengthen its presence in global markets.
The property is part of InterContinental Hotels Group’s Holiday Inn portfolio, a brand with a large base of loyalty travelers. The government said that loyalty-driven travel is a key factor in increasing demand and strengthening year-round performance in destinations like Puerto Plata.
CHC Hotels to Operate the Property
The Holiday Inn Puerto Plata will be operated by CHC HOTELS, a hospitality management company focused on hotel operations and guest experience development.
CHC HOTELS executives described the project as a strong vote of confidence in the north coast, while emphasizing the role of branded hotels in expanding the region’s lodging options and raising standards.
Cofresí Location Connects to Major North Coast Attractions
Atlambar Management, which was involved in the project, highlighted the property’s location in Cofresí as one of its strategic advantages, citing proximity to key Puerto Plata area attractions.
The hotel sits within reach of the city’s historic center, the Puerto Plata cable car to Isabel de Torres, and popular north coast tourism zones including Playa Dorada, Cabarete and Sosúa.
Part of a Larger Push to Modernize Puerto Plata
Tourism Minister David Collado said the opening reflects ongoing public and private investment aimed at modernizing Puerto Plata’s tourism infrastructure, part of a broader effort to strengthen the province’s position in the Dominican Republic’s tourism growth.
The new Holiday Inn joins a growing mix of resort and non-resort accommodations on the north coast, as Puerto Plata continues to expand beyond its traditional sun-and-sand appeal and into business travel, events and conventions.
The Bottom Line
With 115 rooms, event space and a major global brand flag, the new Holiday Inn Puerto Plata – Cofresí Bay Area adds another piece to the destination’s ongoing repositioning strategy, strengthening the north coast’s hotel supply at a time of continued growth for Dominican tourism.
