This Destination on the Coast of South America Is Seeing a Tourism Boom — With Rum, Waterfalls, and Spectacular Scenery

The rum. The waterfalls. The scenery. The adventure. Guyana is finding a new place on travelers’ radar, and it’s showing up in the numbers.
Guyana’s tourism industry continues its strong upward momentum, with the South American destination reporting an 18.3 percent increase in arrivals during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
According to new data from the Guyana Tourism Authority, the country, which is the seat of the Caribbean Community, welcomed 202,027 visitors between January and June 2025, reflecting growing global interest in its eco-tourism offerings, river expeditions, and rainforest adventures and continued growth in new flights.
The increase builds on a steady rise in visitation over the past several years, as Guyana cements its position as one of the Caribbean and South America’s most distinctive nature-driven destinations. The country’s diverse appeal — from the towering Kaieteur Falls to the wildlife-rich Rupununi region — continues to draw both adventure travelers and cultural explorers.
Tourism officials have credited improved airlift connections, new investments in hospitality infrastructure, and targeted marketing initiatives across North America and Europe for the continued growth.
With the peak travel season approaching, Guyana’s tourism sector is on track for another record-breaking year, signaling its growing influence within the wider Caribbean travel landscape.
