Puerto Rico Just Launched “The Green Path” in a New Sustainable Travel Push

By: Caitlin Sullivan - April 22, 2025 - 4:53 pm

The street art in Santurce. The coqui frogs in El Yunque. The immersive culinary adventure in Loiza. Puerto Rico is a hotbed for sustainable travel. And now it’s making it official.

In a move that underscores Puerto Rico’s growing commitment to sustainability, the Island has unveiled The Green Path—a dynamic new platform that invites travelers to engage more deeply, thoughtfully, and consciously with the destination.

Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Launched by Discover Puerto Rico, The Green Path is part education hub, part digital journey—and it aims to do more than just promote eco-tourism. It’s designed to inspire travelers to become what it calls “Responsible Travelers,” blending immersive storytelling with practical tools for sustainable exploration.

What sets this initiative apart is how it weaves Puerto Rico’s natural beauty, rich heritage, and local voices into a narrative that’s both actionable and personal. Developed in partnership with local creators, culture-bearers, and environmental leaders, the platform encourages visitors to align their travel habits with values rooted in sustainability.

At the core of The Green Path are four key pillars that guide users through various facets of conscious travel:

  • The Foodprint takes visitors into the world of local farms, markets, and eco-friendly dining.
  • Legacy Journey explores the stories and architecture that define Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage.
  • Nature Paths highlights the island’s biodiversity and outdoor adventures, from rainforests to reefs.
  • Conscious Stays connects travelers with lodging options that prioritize low-impact and community-focused hospitality.

Each section offers more than just information—it offers experience. Expect first-person travelogues, curated itineraries, videos featuring local voices, and interactive maps filled with sustainable travel tips. As users engage with the platform, they collect points and insights; those who complete 80% of the journey receive a downloadable badge recognizing them as certified “Responsible Travelers.”

But the perks go beyond a digital pat on the back. Certification also unlocks exclusive deals with on-island partners who share a commitment to sustainability—everything from eco-tours to green hotels.

In tandem with the platform’s launch, Discover Puerto Rico also introduced a new real-time availability calendar for accommodations. The tool is aimed at promoting smarter trip planning—encouraging longer stays, spreading tourism more evenly across the island, and avoiding overcrowding in popular areas.

This is just the beginning. More content is set to roll out in phases, with additional experiences and deeper dives into each of the four pillars planned in the coming months. There’s even a dedicated section on the way for the MICE sector—meeting planners and event organizers seeking to make a positive impact while doing business in Puerto Rico. MICE has been a particularly big priority for Discover Puerto Rico in recent years.

With The Green Path, Puerto Rico is not only inviting travelers to see more—it’s asking them to be more. And in doing so, it’s charting a course toward a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for Caribbean tourism.
