Carnival Is Rebranding Its Mahogany Bay Cruise Stop in Roatan. The New “Isla Tropicale” Is Opening Next Year.
Carnival Cruise Line opened its Mahogany Bay cruise destination on the Honduran Caribbean island of Roatan in 2009. Now, it’s getting a major upgrade — and a new name, Caribbean Journal has learned.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, the expanded port aims to enhance the experience for passengers traveling through the western Caribbean — and an island that has become one of the more beloved small islands in the wider region for travelers by land and sea.
The overhaul will include the addition of a large pool complex, complete with a swim-up bar and surrounding lounge areas. Private cabanas and a newly developed peninsula with waterfront views are also in the works, alongside new water lounging features designed for relaxation by the shore.
The move comes as cruise operators increasingly invest in private destinations that offer controlled environments and tailored excursions. At Isla Tropicale, visitors will have access to a range of activities, including snorkeling along the nearby Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, catamaran sailing, and encounters with native wildlife such as capuchin monkeys and sloths at Gumbalimba Park.

Land-based adventures will also be part of the offerings, from jungle ATV rides to horseback swims along the beach. For those interested in local culture, excursions to Roatan’s West End will provide a glimpse into regional cuisine and island life.
Ships currently scheduled to call at Isla Tropicale include the Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee, Mardi Gras, and Carnival Dream, among others.
The expansion reflects ongoing efforts by cruise lines to broaden their private destination portfolios, responding to evolving passenger expectations for more comprehensive and customizable experiences during their voyages. Isla Tropicale, with its combination of natural attractions and new amenities, is positioned to play a notable role in this trend.
Carnival has another major destination currently brewing in The Bahamas: Celebration Key, which is opening this summer on the island of Grand Bahama.
