Delta Air Lines Is Adding More Daily Flights to a Caribbean Island Famous For Its Beaches, Shopping and History

By: Alexander Britell - April 4, 2025 - 3:23 pm

The history. The postcard-perfect white-sand beaches (Magens Bay, anyone?) The painkillers. Those green hills. The Caribbean island of St Thomas has seen more growth than just about anywhere else in the Caribbean, taking an already-beloved island and turning it into one of the hemisphere’s hottest hotspots.

The island of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands has seen a broad lift in new air routes from all over the mainland United States in the last half-decade, and it just added an important expanded route: daily nonstop flights between Boston, Massachusetts and St Thomas’ Cyril King International Airport.

The new daily flights will be kicking off on Dec. 20, just in time for the peak winter season (the so-called “festive season,” the two-week period at the end of December that is the most essential time of year for Caribbean tourism destinations). They’ll be running for the most important period of the season, though Jan. 5, 2026 in a big boost for the island.

Delta Air Lines is also adding expanded service between Atlanta and St Thomas: beginning Jan. 6, Delta will now be flying three daily flights, running through the season to April 12. That’s up from what had been two daily flights from Atlanta to St Thomas.

Delta has been steadily growing its footprint in a number of Caribbean islands, and this is a stamp of approval for the USVI’s continued growth.

The expansion is a great endorsement of the USVI’s innovative sports tourism marketing strategies, one that has focused on partnering with sports team in important source cities with passionate fan bases. That includes Boston, where the USVI cultivated a partnership with the Boston Red Sox, and this new route is a great example of that strategy paying off.

Are you planning a getaway to St Thomas? The island has never been better, in our view. That includes new hotels like the lovely Pink Palm in the heart of historic Charlotte Amalie. You can book a large king room this month at the Pink Palm for $329 a night, with a king suite at $359. In a welcome touch, rooms come with Nespresso machines and Frette beach towels, among other well-thought-out details.

The Caribbean island also has a dynamic culinary scene both in St John and St Thomas. St Thomas’ Blue 11, led by Chef David “Benji” Benjamin was recently named one of the 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean.

Then there is the shopping, centered on the famous thoroughfare of Main Street in the capital, and it’s a charming, historic street with some extremely good, name-brand options on offer.

Of course, St John is right across the water, and it’s an essential stop, whether you’re planning an exclusive St John getaway or just want to do some island-hopping on the Red Hook ferry for a day.

If you want to stay longer on St John, your best bet is to work with Blue Sky Luxury Travels, which has a great collection of villas. (St John has a few hotels but a villa remains the best way to experience its intoxicating blend of raw natural beauty and old-school, barefoot, fun vibes).

If a hotel is more your thing, the Cruz Bay Boutique Hotel is a great option, right in the heart of town (next to some lovely beach bars and a pocket-sized, lovable beach) and rooms starting as low as $255 if you book in May.
