Another Big Decline for Cancun Airport Traffic

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 7, 2025 - 12:21 pm

Cancun’s airport had another major decline in passenger traffic last month, according to new data.

The Mexican Caribbean air hub posted total traffic of 2.489 million last month, a 9.1 percent decrease compared to February 2024.

That included an 11 percent decline in international traffic, according to ASUR, which manages the airport.

While the airport has one of the best experiences in the region, with an impressive duty free area and solid food and beverage concessions, it’s not the airport’s fault — there are larger issues at play.

For the year, total traffic in Cancun is 7.2 percent lower than at this time last year, according to the report.

It seems as if continued crime (and the perception of insecurity) in Cancun and Mexico at large is turning travelers off of the area, and it’s not clear how long it will take to recover from that perception.
