Hyatt Is Opening a New “Centric” Hotel in the Dominican Republic

By: Alexander Britell - September 25, 2024 - 9:41 pm

It’s a brand that’s been rumored to be coming to the Caribbean for years. First, there were talks about one in Barbados. Then another was pegged to open in Puerto Rico. But it looks like the first-ever Hyatt Centric hotel in the Caribbean is coming to the capital of the Dominican Republic.

The new Hyatt Centric Santo Domingo is opening in the spring, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The new Hyatt hotel will be set in the heart of the capital in the city’s Piantini district that is home to an increasing number of hotels, including the recently-opened Courtyard by Marriott.

Dining concepts at the 130-room hotel will include a restaurant and three lounges: that includes Aon Food & Mood, with a creative wine list and an international menu; there’s also a coffee bar, a rooftop bar, and a lobby bar.

What a room will look like.

Yes, there’s a rooftop pool, too, and a gym. You also get free parking, free Wi-Fi, and concierge service.

So when is it actually welcoming guests?

You can book stays at the hotel starting May 15, 2025, according to its Web site.

More importantly, what is is the Hyatt Centric brand, exactly? You may be familiar with traditional Hyatt brands like Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency or Hyatt Ziva and Zilara (the latter being the company’s extremely popular all-inclusives in the Caribbean).

According to the company, Centric is an “upper upscale” brand, with a limited but essential group of amenities: a bar-restaurant, a nice fitness center, and service that’s satisfactory without being over the top. The idea is for each hotel to be customized to its local environment, while skewing toward a slightly younger demographic than, say, the classic Hyatt brand.

What about cost?

Rates start at about $170 per night if you’re not a World of Hyatt member. That price gets you a queen room.

It will be the third major branded hotel to open in Santo Domingo this year, following the summer opening of the new Kimpton Las Mercedes hotel (although that property is located in the historic Colonial Zone) and the aforementioned Marriott.
