The Palm Island Resort and Spa Just Helped Raise EC $1 Million for Union Island
Hurricane Beryl devastated the island of Union Island in the Grenadines when it passed across last month.
That led one Caribbean hotel to go above and beyond to help raise aid and awareness for the plight of Union.
The nearby Palm Island Resort and Spa, which is located just across the water from Union Island, has raised EC $1 million for Union Island in the aftermath of Beryl — despite facing challenges of its own resulting from the storm.
Many residents — including a number of staff members of the Palm Island Resort and Spa — have been left without homes and essential resources.
The resort launched a comprehensive relief initiative that included a GoFundMe campaign that has helped raise more than $1 million EC including additional private donations.
“Our team means the world to us, which is why we are working around the clock to keep them well,” said James Lane, managing director of Palm Island. “While the Caribbean is our home and one of the world’s most beautiful places to spend a vacation, it is the people who make this amazing holiday destination so special. Their warmth, their vibrancy, and their pride. Without them, hospitality simply would not exist.”
Palm Island has already sent two 40-foot containers filled with essential supplies – from building materials to medical supplies, food and water — to the island.
Several private boats have also been dispatched from nearby Trinidad.
The funds raised have also been earmarked for the restoration of vital infrastructure on Union.
As the resort helps to support Union Island’s recovery, it is working to restore its own facilities.
“The resort looks forward to reopening and once again offering guests a unique slice of paradise, all while continuing to play an active role in the region’s recovery,” it said in a statement.
“We hope that in the wake of this crisis, we can rebuild and restore businesses, lives, and opportunity in the Southern Grenadines,” said Lane.
