Marriott Just Opened Its New Riviera Maya Edition in the Mexican Caribbean

The first-ever Edition in the Caribbean is in the Riviera Maya of Mexico.

Marriott calls it the “anti-hotel chain.” Edition, originally conceived as a partnership between the hotel giant and legendary hotelier Ian Schrager, is a collection of “individualized” hotels, all with unique personalities and fresh takes on modern luxury.

Until now, though, the Edition brand hasn’t made it to the wider Caribbean. This week, that changed.

Marriott has opened its first-ever Edition in the Caribbean with the new Riviera Maya Edition at Kanai, the new luxe development that is already home to a new St Regis that opened earlier this year

The new property, which is now in soft opening, has 182 guest rooms and suites, along with a lagoon-style pool, a massive penthouse suite and a perch in the heart of a lush mangrove forest inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The culinary program has five different dining concepts, including a pair of eateries by renowned Mexican chefs: a chef’s table concept helmed by Francisco “Paco” Ruano, and a beach club by Tomas Bermudez.

Ruano’s Alcalde restaurant in Guadalajara is ranked no. 54 in the world.

Chef Ruano has one of the world’s top-ranked eateries in Guadalajara.

“I am delighted to be partnering with EDITION Hotels, joining an esteemed global family of celebrated culinary talent. Preparing for the launch of my offerings at the Riviera Maya property, has helped further develop my skills, and propelled my cooking to new heights.”

The wellness offering at the Edition is strong, too, anchored by a “cenote-inspired” destination spa.

“Designed with a minimal environmental footprint to protect and preserve Kanai’s ecosystem, the ancient Mayan land delivers nothing short of its name, meaning “Paradise on Earth,” the property says.

Rates at the Edition are starting with a preview offer as low as $648 per night, according to Marriott’s Web site.

“marks another milestone in the expansion of #EDITIONHotels around the world, bringing sophisticated, personalized and one-of-a-kind hospitality experiences to Mexico as the brand’s first destination in Latin America,” Marriott said in a statement.
