Grenada Readies for Spicemas Carnival

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 21, 2023

Grenada is readying for its beloved summer carnival: Spicemas, which will take over the tri-island destination from Aug. 1-15.

This year’s event will see thousands of Grenadians and visitors come to the destination for a vibrant cultural celebration reflecting Grenada’s African, French, British and Caribbean heritage.

It’s called Spicemas, in a nod to the island’s robust production of spices; indeed, in Grenada, more spices are produced per square mile than anywhere else in the Caribbean.

“The pure energy that reverberates throughout the destination is something we all look forward to experiencing and sharing with the world,” said Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority. “It is by far the best expression of carnival and this year’s will be unforgettable.”

Major carriers including JetBlue and Caribbean Airlines have already expanded service to Grenada for the event.

JetBlue is operating a second daily nonstop flight from New York John F Kennedy to Grenada between Aug. 7 and Sept. 1.

“The expanded connectivity is a true testament to Spicemas’ appeal,” Roach said. “It’s a celebration not to be missed and the extra service makes it possible for even more people to witness our culture come alive here in Grenada.”
