The Best Rum Bar (And Best Pizza) in St John

By: Alexander Britell - May 5, 2023

They call it the Rum With a View. It’s a mix of Lovango sorrel rum, elderflowers, passion fruit agave, lemon and egg white.

It’s the kind of colorful, creative, funky cocktail that exemplifies what we all love about St John.

And it’s just one of an impressive menu at the island’s hottest bar: the Lovango Rum Bar in Cruz Bay.

It’s the premier rum bar on the island.

Lovango, which also serves up the popular rum of the same name, has quickly become the island’s go-to watering hole, with a eclectic personality that makes it equal parts rum bar, eatery, entertainment spot and pizzeria.

By day, it’s a place to cool down and chill out, with things heating up when the sun goes down for nightly live music (and spectacular sunsets).

The pizza is as good as the view.

The latter is the result of what is one of the most beautiful perches on the island, a patio set seemingly right above the water, looking out on the boats and the beach and the hubbub of St John’s port of entry.

The aforementioned cocktails range from the Category Five, with habanero rum, grapefruit, lime, mango, passionfruit agave, spices and a salted rim; to a classic take on the daiquiri: Plantation pineapple rum, lime juice and simple syrup.

Craft cocktails are the standard.

And yes, this is a rum bar, with an ever-changing, always diverse selection of rums ,both Lovango and from around the sugarcane hotspots of the broader Caribbean Basin: five-star Barbancourt, Gosling’s Old Rum, Rhum JM Xo and Admiral Rodney, to name a few.

Live music is every day.

Then there’s the pizza: it’s unquestionably the best pizza on St John, classic Neapolitan-style pies from traditional Margheritas to innovative takes with adventurous toppings.

It’s the new beating heart of downtown, a haven for good eats and craft cocktails that just so happens to look out on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful little bays.

In other words, it’s a rum bar with a view.
