Puerto Rico tourism is off to sizzling start so far in 2023, if the island’s air traffic is any indication.

Passenger traffic to Puerto Rico’s primary air hub, Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, topped 874,400 in February — a 20.5 percent increase over the same month last year, according to ASUR, which manages the airport.

For the year, the numbers are even better, with US passenger traffic at San Juan’s airport topping 1.9 million.

That represents a more than 29 percent increase over last year, which was itself an all-time record for the island.

The biggest challenge for Puerto Rico will be ramping up its hotel development to meet the continued surge in demand.

As hotel occupancy continues to be extremely tight, the island will have to look to increase its room stock.
