There’s a new airport in the Caribbean region, and a portal to one of the region’s under-the-radar destinations.

The new Tela Airport on the Caribbean coast of Honduras has officially launched operations, with flights capability for both domestic and international air operators.

The airport first opened last month to facilitate traffic to the recent PGA Tour Latin America Honduras Open, presented by the nearby Indura Beach and Golf Resort, which should see a major boost from the opening of the airport.

Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez is calling the new airport a “gateway for tourism development” in the country’s Caribbean region.

“Honduras will become the forefront of tourism in Central America.” — President Juan Orlando Hernandez
