Hotel Highlight: A Spirited Welcome at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya

I’ve been lucky enough to stay at some nice hotels in my time, and more often than not there’s welcome token awaiting me in my room. Usually it’s a bottle of sparkling wine, a fruit plate or fresh flowers. But I can’t say that I’ve ever received a welcome quite like this:

Yep, right next to the Nespresso machine and the selection of teas in my suite at the posh Grand Velas was a bottle of Don Julio Reposado, complete with all the fixings for a “Bienvenido!” shot ¬– or three.

And lest you think the resort rolled out the red carpet just for me, my butler (yes, it’s a tough life) insisted that tequila service comes standard in every suite in the adults-only Grand Class section of the Riviera Maya, Mexico resort.

No, complimentary tequila on a tray probably won’t be your primary reason for picking one hotel over another. But it certainly is a nice reward for choosing this one!

CJ’s Hotel Highlight column examines the little things that make Caribbean hotels even greater.
