Caribbean Concierge: The St Kitts Marriott’s Sherima Somersall

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 30, 2014 - 7:01 am

Tiny St Kitts remains one of the Caribbean’s undiscovered gems, and the latest Caribbean Concierge gets some island advice from the island’s largest hotel, the St Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino. Caribbean Journal caught up with Concierge Sherima Somersall to learn more about her picks for the perfect itinerary on the island.

Where are you from, and how long have you been working at the property?

I am from the small town of Cayon in St Kitts.

What do you like most about St Kitts?

St Kitts is the land of my birth and even though our country is very small, we are very rich in history and culture. We are a very proud people yet one of the most friendly anywhere in the world.

What’s your favourite part of working at the hotel?

The fact that in my area, I am one of the first to welcome guests to the resort and my island. I also love that in my position I get the opportunity to educate them about my island and be their guide, so to speak, on all things Kittitian.

What’s something most people don’t know about visiting St Kitts that they should?

One of things about visiting St Kitts is that you get 2 islands for the price of one. We are a twin-island federation, and our little sister Nevis is just a 45 minute boat ride away. It’s very easy to travel between islands and though we are sisters, the experience is different.

What are some attractions in St Kitts you recommend to guests?

We have a wide variety of recommendations based on what our guests are interested in:

Adventure: Ziplining, Volcano Hike

History/Culture: Brimstone Hill National Fortress, Romney Manor, Tombs of Samuel  Jefferson and Sir Thomas Warner, St Kitts Scenic Railway

Ecotourism: Rainforest Hike, Jeep Safari Tour, Turtle Monitoring

Sea Adventure: Scuba Diving, Deep Sea Fishing, Catamaran Cruises, Snorkeling, Beaches

Where is your favourite place to eat off property?

We have a variety of cuisines on island, however if you are looking for authentic Caribbean cooking we recommend Alfredos Restaurant  for lunch and Cathy’s and Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack for dinner.

Where is your favourite bar off property?

My favourite bars would be Vibes Bar and Buddies Beach Bar

If you had to recommend one experience in St Kitts, what would it be?

An island tour: This is the best way to see the island. We have excellent tour operators on island who will take you to the different historical sites, speak to you about the culture and history, take you off the beaten path and provide you an excellent [sense] of what St Kitts and Kittitians have to offer.
