Grenada has secured additional financing from the United Arab Emirates to help fund the construction of the country’s new Parliament building.

The project, which will be set on Mt Wheldale, is being designed by local architects COCOA Design, which won a design competition in October 2012.

It is slated to cost around $11.1 million. The government of Australia is also supporting the construction of the building.

Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell made the announcement during his budget address this week.

The new Parliament building will replace the country’s former Parliament building, which was destroyed beyond repair by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The government said seven firms had now been shortlisted for the project, with a tender soon to be launched.
