Bahamian Foreign Minister Frederick Mitchell is currently on a working visit to Cuba.

Mitchell held talks with Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina Gonzalez in Havana on Thursday, which the Cuban government called a “fraternal meeting.”

Mitchell was joined by National Security Minister Bernard Nottage and Bahamian Ambassador to Cuba Alma Adams.

The Cuban side included Rafael Dausa Cespedes, director of consular affairs and attention for Cuban residents abroad and Cuban Ambassador to the Bahamas Ernesto Soberon Guzman.

In recent months, there have been some protests near the Bahamian Consulate in Miami and near the Port of Miami concerning allegations of mistreatment of Cuban migrants in the Bahamas.

The Bahamas has been a transit point for a number of Cuban refugees over the years.

In a statement earlier this week, the Foreign Ministry said it had engaged Cuba’s government on the matter, ahead of this week’s talks.

The Bahamas also said it was continuing investigations into the allegations.
