Rum Journal: A “Beach Bum” Cocktail From Guatemala’s Ron Botran

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 28, 2013

Yes, Guatemala is in the Caribbean. with a relatively tiny but robust Caribbean coastline located within the Biotopo Punta del Manabique preserve.

And yes, Guatemala is one of the world’s Meccas for rum production, led by well-known producers like Zacapa and Botran.

The latter, one of our favourites, produces a range of rums from Botran Reserva to the top-notch Botran Solera 1893.

And while Botran is traditionally a sipping rum, it finds a home in a number of delectable cocktails.

The “Botran Beachbum,” developed for Botran by Chris Hudnall, a bartender at the Soho Beach House in Miami Beach, is just the ticket for a sandy Sunday afternoon.

Ingredients:

2 oz Botran Solera Rum
3/4 oz Home-made Ginger Syrup
3/4 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Watermelon Juice
3/4 Home-made Peach Bitters
Topped with Soda Water
Glass: Collins Glass
Garnish: Mint Sprig

Directions:
Put all ingredients into boston glass except the soda water and give it a very light shake. Strain into collins glass over fresh ice, charge with soda water, garnish, and serve.

Enjoy.
