CJ Pick: La Zafra, Vieques, Puerto Rico

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 19, 2013

TINY ESPERANZA is the better-known seaside destination in Vieques, full of beach bars and restaurants along its famous Malecon.

Isabel Segunda, on the other hand, is the island’s administrative and commercial capital — with a little more bustle and grit.

But it’s not without surprises — and some great food, from sit-down sushi to taco food trucks.

La Zafra, which opened only in February, has been making a name for itself with fresh, authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in the heart of downtown Isabel. It’s named after the harvest of sugarcane — which was once Vieques’ dominant industry until the early half of the 20th century.

The eatery, set amid leafy side streets, has a simple but robust menu: churrasco, ceviche, chicken wings, fresh dorado, and, our favourite — chorizo turnovers.

Whether you’re sitting on the outdoor patio or in the tiny indoor area, you’ll feel like you’re eating at someone’s private home.

If you can find the time to get away from Vieques’ seductive beaches, La Zafra is worth the trip.
